Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Halifax County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Mobile substance use outreach program
A proposed mobile unit would bring treatment links, Narcan, testing strips and education to every town, funded by a federal grant of up to $750K/year for four years with no county match.
Scotland Neck Fire Service District extension
The county began the formal process to expand the Scotland Neck fire taxing district around a new substation near Moonlight. Residents in the expanded area would pay the fire tax but gain a better ISO rating, meaning lower property insurance bills.
911 Central Communications Funding Shift
After a settlement ended the litigation with Roanoke Rapids, the county is picking up the entire cost of 911 dispatch — about a penny and a quarter of the tax rate. Roanoke Rapids saves roughly $400,000 a year, and the county will stop taking non-emergency calls.
Courthouse security and court system needs
Judges asked the county for a secure sallyport on the third floor, better parking-lot security, carpet and lighting, citing today's climate of violence. They also reported new DWI court sessions and a successful recovery court whose funding runs out June 30.
