Junior County Commissioners program wins state innovation award
The county's student leadership program was one of eleven statewide winners of the 2026 Civic Excellence in Innovation Award; 30+ students signed up for the new year and will host a candidates forum in October.
Community Grants Program funding
A record 35 groups asked for $636,276; the board funded 16 with the $50,000 pot. Commissioners suggested clarifying the cap and possibly raising future funding.
CADA office lease at Newtown Center
The county wants to move CADA into bigger space at the Newtown Center at $1,617 a month — quadruple their current $400 rent. Commissioners worried the nonprofit can't afford it and sent staff to work out a plan before September.
C-PACE financing program participation
The county wants to opt into the state's new C-PACE program letting commercial property owners finance energy and resiliency upgrades — at zero cost or risk to the county.
Annual Board Retreat Format
The board is considering moving its annual retreat from December to January, possibly at the NCACC offices in Raleigh, with a possible joint session with neighboring counties.
Sales Tax Distribution Method
The county kept the ad valorem method of sharing sales tax — the formula that lets fire districts and school districts receive sales tax revenue. Switching to per-capita would have cut them out.
Farmers market revival
Residents asked the county to bring back the closed farmers market. The county manager is exploring new locations, possibly the 4-H property, and even a mobile market — the old site is being used for sheriff's storage.
Trash collection, recycling, and illegal dumping
Commissioners raised resident complaints about recycling fees for people who don't use the service, confusion over the $144 solid waste fee, and illegal dumping along roads; staff will follow up with the affected resident and look at landfill hours and education.
